International QSR & Beverage Expansion Intelligence
Issue 00 · October 2026 · Pilot
Ownership, partners and the ability to execute
Research cutoff: 19 October 2026. This October edition combines current-month signals with selected earlier 2026 announcements and quarterly evidence. It is not a completed October monthly roundup. Event and reporting dates are stated below.
Executive view
The selected developments point to three questions for international foodservice leaders: who should own the growth platform, which partner can deliver it, and how much operational change the network can absorb. Those are related decisions. A different ownership model changes the economics visible in the accounts; a new development agreement changes the pipeline; a menu pilot tests the ability to serve customers consistently.
Editorial interpretation: Expansion should be assessed through operating evidence and governance as well as headline scale. The announcements reviewed here do not, by themselves, establish partner profitability, investment returns or successful delivery of future openings.

Europe · Product ambition meets kitchen execution
McDonald’s tests hand-breaded chicken in Ireland
Reported fact · 13 October 2026: McDonald’s UK & Ireland announced a pilot at selected Dublin restaurants from mid-October until February. It is intended to test preparation and consistent delivery with limited kitchen complexity; an advertising-supported Irish pilot is planned for February. McDonald’s: Hand-Breaded Chicken Pilot (2026-10-13).
Interpretation: This is an operating-capability test, rather than evidence of new-country entry or a confirmed Europe-wide rollout. Leaders considering a comparable change should test labor deployment, throughput, food safety controls and consistency alongside customer response.
Watch next: Pilot findings, changes to restaurant workflow and an explicit decision about the scope of further deployment. The announcement does not establish chainwide returns or a wider rollout date.
GCC · The partner behind the café network
The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf reaches a Kuwait milestone
Reported fact · 22 September 2026: Jollibee Group reported CBTL’s 130th café in Kuwait with Al-Ghunaim Trading Co., describing a partnership of more than 20 years. Jollibee Group: CBTL and Al-Ghunaim, Kuwait milestone (2026-09-22).
Interpretation: The milestone provides a concrete example of a sustained local partnership. It does not demonstrate that the same network density, format mix or economics would translate to another GCC market. A partner assessment should examine the operating organization behind the count: field management, training, real estate and supply-chain capacity.
Watch next: Disclosures on formats, closures, sales quality and the economics of incremental locations. Café count alone cannot establish market share, saturation or profitability.
Asia · Ownership and development models
Highlands Coffee: a signed agreement to change control
Reported fact · 23 September 2026: Jollibee Group announced an agreement for its subsidiary to sell an 11% interest in Highlands Coffee’s Vietnam business to Viet Thai International for approximately US$88 million plus adjustments. The announcement implies US$800 million for 100% of equity. On completion, ownership would be 49% for Jollibee Group and 51% for VTI. Conditions include regulatory clearances and shareholder consents. Jollibee Group: Highlands Coffee ownership agreement (2026-09-23).
Interpretation: Retaining economic participation while changing control creates a different governance proposition from outright disposal. The stated valuation is an equity value; it should not be presented as enterprise value or used to infer an EBITDA multiple without the necessary financial information.
Watch next: A completion announcement and final consideration. This pilot treats the transaction as announced and conditional; it does not confirm closing.
Starbucks China: compare performance on a consistent basis
Reported fact · Q3 FY2026, ended 28 June; released 29 July: Starbucks reported completion in April of its China transaction with funds managed by Boyu Capital, retaining 40% of the joint venture. The company attributed its 34% International revenue decline primarily to the conversion to a licensed JV model; International comparable store sales rose 5.7%. Starbucks: Q3 FY2026 results (2026-07-29).
Interpretation: Revenue recognition changed with ownership. The revenue decline cannot be interpreted as a matching fall in customer sales. Comparisons should identify company-operated retail revenue, royalties, supply revenue and equity interests separately. Comparable-store measures also have a defined population and do not represent every store in a system.
Watch next: The first full-year reporting under the changed structure and the definitions used in subsequent comparisons.
Yum China: franchises contribute to network additions
Reported fact · Q2 2026, ended 30 June; released 30 July: Yum China reported 560 net new stores in the quarter, with 41% opened by franchisees. Its network reached 19,297 stores, of which 18% were franchise-operated. Yum China: Q2 2026 results (2026-07-30).
Interpretation: The franchise contribution to quarterly additions and the franchise share of the installed base answer different questions. A growing franchise pipeline can reduce direct development capital requirements while increasing the need for partner support, controls and alignment. These figures describe Yum China’s network, not the global Yum! Brands system.
Watch next: Subsequent disclosure of net openings, franchise mix and restaurant performance. Do not add Yum China counts to global brand counts without first eliminating overlapping restaurants.
Canada · A development pipeline needs a delivery record
Jollibee adds British Columbia franchise commitments
Reported fact · 10 August 2026: Jollibee Group reported a July multi-unit agreement for 16 British Columbia restaurants over five years, with an experienced multi-brand food retail operator. Together with a June Edmonton agreement for 10 restaurants, its reported Canadian committed franchise pipeline was 26 restaurants. Jollibee Group: British Columbia development agreement (2026-08-10).
Interpretation: These are development commitments. They are not 26 operating restaurants, and the announcement is not a first entry of the Jollibee brand into Canada or British Columbia. A useful follow-up measures site conversion, opening timing and the field team’s ability to support each cohort.
Watch next: Named locations and actual openings. The cited announcement does not name the British Columbia franchisee, so this issue does not identify one.
Ownership · Redraw the platform map
Pizza Hut: two completed ownership transactions
Reported fact · 1 September 2026: Yum! Brands announced completion of Pizza Hut’s sale outside Mainland China to LongRange Capital for approximately US$1.5 billion, subject to adjustments and a possible earn-out. It also confirmed that the Mainland China sale to Yum China closed on 7 August. Aggregate consideration was reported as US$2.7 billion, subject to adjustments. Yum! Brands: completed Pizza Hut sale (2026-09-01).
Interpretation: A brand name can now sit across distinct ownership territories. Franchise and investment assessments should identify the actual rights-holder, territory and contractual counterparty. Historical group-level comparisons also need to account for the portfolio change.
Watch next: Disclosed changes to development priorities, support arrangements and technology under the respective owners. Completion of an ownership transaction is not evidence of changes to individual franchise contracts.
Jollibee: an international platform with proposed standalone governance
Reported fact · 1 September 2026: JFC said it was contemplating a separate listing of JFCI on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange’s Main Board and named Richard Chong Woo Shin as its intended CEO. The separation and listing remain subject to restructuring, market conditions and required approvals. Jollibee Group: proposed international-business listing (2026-09-01).
Interpretation: A standalone international business would need a clear allocation of capital, management accountability and support capabilities. The proposal should be evaluated as a contemplated corporate action, rather than treated as a completed listing or a new store-opening commitment.
Watch next: Formal transaction documents, approvals and a confirmed timetable. No completion date is assumed here.
Leadership agenda
- Brand owners: Link development targets to a resourced operating plan. Establish what evidence will justify the next phase.
- Franchise groups: Review the number of openings the organization can support alongside the capital it can commit.
- Investors and boards: Normalize changes in ownership, consolidation and geography before comparing revenue or growth.
- Management teams: Keep a record of commitments, openings, closures and performance by restaurant cohort.
Next dated checkpoint
Starbucks announced on 8 October that it plans to release Q4 and full-year FY2026 results on 29 October 2026 after market close. Those results fall after this issue’s cutoff and are not included. Starbucks: FY2026 results-call announcement (2026-10-08).
Scope, definitions and limitations
This is a selective public-source pilot, not a census of global activity. The evidence set is concentrated in Jollibee Group, Starbucks and Yum-related platforms; it cannot support conclusions about relative brand momentum or market-wide rankings. Company announcements establish what companies reported, not independent verification of store economics or every stated outcome.
Source publication dates and financial reporting periods are retained. Planned openings are commitments, not completed units. Net additions differ from gross openings. A JV ownership conversion is not a new opening. Proposed and signed transactions remain distinct from completed transactions. Currencies and approximate US-dollar equivalents are reproduced as reported, without an independently calculated exchange rate.
The pilot does not provide a like-for-like menu-pricing dataset, market sizing, private-company EBITDA estimates or a comprehensive register of master-franchise deals. These would require additional comparable evidence. Analysis and watchpoints are editorial judgments. Only public sources were used; no confidential employer or client material was used.
